Mine Over Matter: Six Flags Over Georgia Begins Teasing

Earlier this week, Six Flags Over Georgia dropped a “nugget” on social media that led theme park fans to think that change is on the horizon at the park.

Atop a folder marked “Top Secret,” the park posted a sticky note with January 22 – that’s this upcoming Wednesday in case you’re in a post-holiday calendar haze. In the first photo, there are references to the Dahlonega Mining Co. at the bottom of the folder. Inside, there are historical mining images.

But what does this mean?

A quick history lesson. The Dahlonega Mining Co. is almost certainly a reference to the Dahlonega Mine Train, an original park attraction that opened at Six Flags Over Georgia during its inaugural season in 1967. The family roller coaster, built by Arrow Dynamics, takes its name from Dahlonega, Georgia, a town about 70 miles northeast of Six Flags Over Georgia, where the United States’ first Gold Rush happened in 1828.

Is this tease indicating that Six Flags Over Georgia is breathing new life into the classic coaster?

Late in 2024, Six Flags Entertainment Corp. filed a new trademark for “Georgia Goldrusher.” – which sounds like a new ride name, at least to us, who are woefully undereducated in a trademark law. If they decide to apply the new moniker to the classic mine train, Georgia Goldrusher maintains enough of the state history without requiring a pronunciation lesson on how to pronounce Dahlonega properly. (It’s duh-lon-uh-guh, by the way, at least according to my friends from Georgia.)

It could even prove to be a tie to Six Flags Over Georgia’s new regional sister park, Carowinds, whose Carolina Goldrusher – also an original park attraction – has operated at the park since 1973.

If this indeed is the new name for the Dahlonega Mine Train, it wouldn’t be the only coaster in the chain receiving a new name and presumably backstory, as it was announced that Six Flags Fiesta Texas would be renaming/retheming their “Goliath” invert to “Chupacabra” for the 2025 season, along with Intimidator 305/Project 305 becoming “Pantherian” at Kings Dominion.

Fortunately, we don’t have to wait long to find out – we’ll hopefully have an answer on Wednesday!
